Trauma Therapy

Trauma can leave a lasting impact on the way we think, feel, and move through the world. Whether it stems from a single overwhelming event, childhood experiences, or ongoing stress, trauma often lives not only in our memories, but also in our nervous system. You may notice it showing up as anxiety, difficulty trusting others, emotional numbness, relationship challenges, hypervigilance, or feeling stuck in patterns that don't seem to change, no matter how much insight you've gained.

Specialized trauma therapies are designed to help the brain and body work through painful experiences in a way that feels safe, collaborative, and tailored to your unique needs. Rather than simply revisiting the past, these approaches focus on helping your nervous system heal so you can experience greater relief in the present.

How does ART work?

Mental health therapy at Growing Together offers you a safe and contained space to explore current and past stressful and traumatic experiences.   We support all clients through  a trauma and attachment-informed lens to explore what in your past and present may be contributing to current challenges or distress. Using this trauma-informed lens, we support you in safely uprooting trauma experiences to assist the brain in reprocessing and reorganizing where traumatic memories are stored. Knowing our clients don’t have to live with the suffering trauma can cause, we use evidenced-based approaches such as ART to support you in reducing or eliminating symptoms of PTSD. Before beginning the ART process, you will build a trusting relationship with your therapist to feel confident that you will be guided through this process safely while feeling deeply supported.

"Keep the knowledge, lose the pain"
- Amy shuman

The ART process works to reprogram how your brain is storing distressing memories to reduce the heightened emotions and sensations that accompany the memory. This reprogramming is done through bi lateral stimulation such as eye movements or tapping, visualization through direct guidance from your therapist, contained exposure to the memory, and increasing tolerance for feeling emotions safely. ART does not require you to talk through your traumatic experience or revisit the memory session after session. Each ART session includes multiple techniques to support you in regulating and grounded prior to leaving your therapist’s office. Many clients begin to feel relief from ART as soon as 1-5 sessions.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people process and heal from traumatic or distressing experiences. During EMDR, you'll briefly recall aspects of a difficult memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, gentle tapping, or alternating tones. This process is thought to help the brain reprocess memories that have become "stuck," allowing them to be stored in a way that feels less overwhelming and emotionally distressing.

EMDR is always tailored to your individual needs and is integrated within the broader therapeutic relationship. Your therapist will help you build coping skills, establish a sense of safety, and move at a pace that feels manageable before beginning trauma processing. Throughout the process, you'll work collaboratively to ensure treatment feels supportive, empowering, and aligned with your goals.

"The goal of EMDR treatment is to rapidly metabolize the dysfunctional residue from the past and transform it into something useful."
- Francine Shapiro

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a trauma-focused therapy that uses specific eye positions to help access and process emotions, memories, and body sensations that may be difficult to reach through words alone. During a Brainspotting session, your therapist helps you identify a point in your visual field, often called a "brainspot," while encouraging you to notice what you're experiencing in your body. This mindful awareness, combined with a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship, can help facilitate the processing of unresolved trauma and emotional distress.

Like all of our trauma therapies, Brainspotting is tailored to your individual needs and moves at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Your therapist will guide the process while creating space for your brain and body to process experiences naturally. Brainspotting can be used on its own or integrated with other therapeutic approaches, depending on your goals and preferences.

“Where you look affects how you feel.”
